Posted under Editorials on Monday, 28 September 2009 by jack

Filed under: Handsets, Others, Verizon Wireless, CDMA Verizon’s on a bizarre form factor kick lately, having just released the Nokia Twist — and now we’ve got this strange little sucker, supposedly coming to market as the “Razzle.” Astute observers will note that the Razzle is basically Verizon’s branded version of the PCD TXT8030 first seen back at CTIA in April of this year, offering a 1.3 megapixel camera, VZ Navigator compatibility, and — here’s the big one — a lower half that swivels 180 degrees to choose between a full QWERTY keyboard and stereo speakers.

Exclusive: Interview with The Symbian Foundation’s Roadmap Catalyst - Roadmap and Propositions Julien Fourgeaud

Posted under Editorials on Saturday, 26 September 2009 by jack

Last month I introduced you all to a friend of mine from The Symbian Foundation, Julien Fourgeaud , Roadmap Catalyst - Roadmap and Propositions .  Back then, I promised you an exclusive interview with Julien.  I did met up with him at Nokia World , but sadly due to meetings, and appointments, we didn’t get the chance to get together for an in-depth video interview as planned.  We have both been so busy since Nokia World too, it’s been a mission to find the time to put together this interview for you all, with Julien jetting off around the world for various meetings, and events, the only time I have seen or heard from Julien was on Twitter when he was in-between airports and alike.  I am however, really pleased to tell you, we have now, finally got an in-depth interview for you, but instead of the video interview, it’s in the form of a texted based Q&A, but I’m sure you will enjoy it all the same.  I wish to take this opportunity to thank Julien for his time on answering my questions for this interview; it’s really appreciated, and valued.  Ok, onto the interview, grab yourself a cuppa, and get yourself comfy, its a great read.! Ovi Store now allowing Re-Downloads

Posted under Editorials on Friday, 25 September 2009 by jack

Earlier this month I told you all about an interview our Social Media group had at Nokia World with the Ovi Store Director Eric John , and showed you the video interview itself.  If you watched this video, you would of noticed that one of our group questions was regarding the issue of Re-Downloads from the Ovi Store.  To give you an example of this senareo, basically, say you downloaded the facebook application to your N97, but for some reason you had to hard reset the device at some point later on, thus losing all your installed applications.  You see, with downloaded applications from Ovi Store, you cannot save the .sis file on your PC to use at times like this, you have to re-download, and have to either send it to your phone via link using your pc, or download, and install via the Ovi Store directly on your device.  Now going back to the senareo,  If you returned to the Ovi Store to re-download the facebook application, you would be faced with a greyed out “Download” option.  This is because the Ovi Store identifies your device having already dowloaded this application.  Thanks to the All About Symbian’s Steve Litchfield , we have come to know that this rollout is still underway, and at the moment, only Ovi Store Client version 1.05 (271) or above are currently allowing re-downloads.  Head over to All About Symbian to find out what Steve’s tried out with regards fre-downloading applications from Ovi Store.  Well, it looks like Eric John was true to his word, and now, you are able to re-download applications from Ovi Store.  Its a sure sign that there is indeed a lot of work going on behind the scenes at the Ovi Store, and this is a positive step in the right direction for the service.

Whilst at Nokia World this year, I noticed in the Experience Lounge, a display table, with a couple of TFT Monitors, and a notice saying that something would be announced the following day, the second day of Nokia World. On the second day, I went back to the Experience Lounge to take a further look, and find out what this new announcement was.

China Mobile, Nokia Siemens team up to show first TD-LTE femtocell

Posted under Editorials on Monday, 21 September 2009 by admin

Filed under: China Mobile, LTE LTE’s being designed to support deployment in both frequency division (FD-LTE) and time division (TD-LTE) modes depending on bandwidth allocation and the legacy network that’s being upgraded, and in China Mobile’s case, they’re looking at possibly rolling out a mix — TD-LTE makes for an elegant and inexpensive upgrade path when you’re starting with another tech with “TD” in its name, TD-SCDMA. Carriers around the world are looking to lean heavily on femtocells to boost LTE footprint out of the gate, and to that end, China Mobile has teamed up with Nokia Siemens — a company that’s been pushing a number of “world’s firsts” lately — to show off the first functional TD-LTE femtocell demo by streaming video over a base station in the carrier’s labs
