Nokia Surge review

Posted under Editorials on Friday, 31 July 2009 by admin

Filed under: Handsets, Reviews, Nokia, ATT, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA Some might say that the phone you’re peering at above is the most un-Nokia-like Nokia device produced in quite some time (if not ever), but remember, this one was custom made for US consumers and AT&T’s audience — something that’s not true for too many Espoo-sourced handsets. Once known as the Mako, Nokia’s Surge (or 6790 in international speak) is certainly unorthodox in design, though the actual specs list is fairly familiar. We get the feeling that Nokia was aiming to hit a very specific niche with this device, somewhere in-between the text-happy handsets adored by tweens and the smartphone desired by Mr.

Nokia N97 ‘Mini’ gets pictured in the wild?

Posted under Editorials on Wednesday, 29 July 2009 by admin

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia We’ve already heard talk of a Nokia N97 Mini (or Mini N97, if you will) from folks who should know what the situation is, and it looks like things have now gotten more interesting still, with some seemingly legitimate pictures of the rumored device finding their way to us that show it out and about with its bigger brother.

Self harming N97 Main Camera Lense Slider Cover Exposed

Posted under Editorials on Tuesday, 28 July 2009 by admin

Just a couple of weeks ago now,  I posted up an article asking our readers if their N97 was self harming .  Were scratches appearing on their N97’s main camera glass.?  So far, from various sources, including a bloated flood of complaints on Nokia Discussions, we are now well in the 100’s of people who have purchased this latest flagship Nokia device, only to be dissapointed with the main camera slider cover, which actually scratches the glass that covers the lens when slid open, and closed. We have also found out, thanks to Nokiausers member, brkix in Croatia, that the blue pad that you see under the slider, is not in any way, shape, or form, there to clean the glass that covers the camera lense. brkis reports after dismantling his N97’s Camera cover, exposes a very cheap, and tacky piece of hard plastic, with an embedded metal square magnet, which is used with a metal trigger in the N97, so it knows then the slider is open, or closed.  This very blue pad, is the cause of all the scratches we are seeing.

Posted under Editorials on Monday, 27 July 2009 by admin

Filed under: CDMA, LTE Arguably the crown jewel lying in fallen giant Nortel’s corpse, the company’s CDMA and LTE infrastructure units have been pursued by all the usual suspects — Nokia Siemens and Ericsson, just to name a couple — plus some unusual ones like fellow Canadian company RIM. That party appears to be drawing to a close, though, with Ericsson emerging victorious to the tune of $1.13 billion.

Following the outcome* of the auction for the CDMA and Long Term Evolution (LTE) assets of Nortel, Nokia Siemens Networks remains focused on maintaining its leadership in the global wireless infrastructure industry and sustaining its recent momentum in the North American market, “Our final offer for Nortel’s assets represented a fair price, and we did not enter this process with a win-at-any-cost mindset,” said Bosco Novak, Chief Markets Operations Officer, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Ours was an opportunistic bid aimed at supporting the great progress we’ve made in North America in the past 18 months, and we are very confident that momentum will continue to grow.”  Nokia Siemens Networks has transformed its North American business under the leadership of region head Sue Spradley. The company announced on July 20, 2009 it had won a contract with the new Canadian mobile operator Globalive Wireless for the roll-out of a 3G network in Canada.
